New Phone 2009

Update 6/10/2009:

Comparison between the 2 forerunners:

Feature iPhone 3GS HTC Touch Pro2 Conclusions
Phone Probably not a big difference here.
Battery Not removeable, capacity unknown. user changeable, 1500mAh HTC wins
Storage 16/32GB, no slot for adding more Tiny?, microSD for expansion
Updates 3.0 on June 17, 2009. Major about once a year. Minor as needed. 6.1 is current. 6.5 due ? 7.0 in testing.
Sync/Management iTunes WMDC (Windows Mobile Device Center, formerly Active Sync) iTunes on windows SUCKS.
Screen 3.5″ 480×320 3.6″ WVGA 800×480
Keyboard On screen Slide out QWERT, 5 row. Supposedly the iPhone is good after the learning curve. 3.0 will allow in landscape mode. Still think the HTC will be better.
Browser Safari IE Mobile, Opera Mobile, StarFox
GPS Yes Yes
Camera 3MP, autofocus, no flash. Tap to focus. Video: VGA 30fps. 3MP, autofocus, no flash. 2nd camera. Video ?
Apps 40k+ but only Apple
Touch Screen Multitouch Single Touch Multi-touch is VERY cool. Zooming is only the beginning for how cool this will be.
Size iPhone is thinner because it doesn’t have a keyboard, but neither is that big so a tie.
Geotagging photo and video geotagging AND direction (compass) iPhone is full of win here.
Wifi 802.11b/g 802.11b/g

Update 6/9/2009:
iPhone 3GS announced. Available 6/19 for $199 (16GB) or $299 (32GB) with a 2 year contract.
I think it comes down to the iPhone 3GS and the HTC Touch Pro2.
Physical keyboard vs onscreen (though, voice commands and speech to text might negate the need for a keyboard), resolution (Pro2 is 800×480 while the iPhone is still

Update:
Hrm, I’m thinking the BB devices use screens that are physically too small.

Update:
Some new stuff that looks pretty good:
LG Monaco (winMo), HTC Touch Pro2 (winMo), LG Opera TV (winMo) (no keyboard?), Wooo (720p video), Onyx (BB), HTC Dream (Google). Palm Pre (webOS) if it comes to GSM

The iMate KJam seems to have died (blinks red when I try to charge it). Time to find a new phone.

Narrowing it down to:
Fuze (AT&T No Commitment Pricing (New) 499.99, 2-yr Contract Price 349.99-50MIR, Refurb $249.99 5/27/2009)
iPhone (AT&T “3G” New 16GB 2yr contract 299.00, $149.00 refurb 5/27/2009)
BB Curve 8900 (AT&T No Commitment Pricing $449.99, 2-yr Contract Price 299.99, $100 MIR 5/27/2009)
Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 ($525.00 1ShopMobile.com 5/27/2009)

Requierments are:
GSM (taking with us to Brasil frequently)
PDA/Smartphone (touch screen preferred)
3+ MP Camera (2MP might be ok, 1MP is the suck)
Web, email
Qwerty keyboard (physical prefered, but not required, I hear the iphone keyboard is good, but takes time to getting used to)
Bluetooth
HotSpot – Tmobile’s feature seems really cool.

Seems that Tmobile’s service is much more expensive than AT&T’s, considering the discount I get at AT&T via AMD.

KJam Upgrade

  1. Backup
  2. Installed Windows Mobile Device Center (since I’m using Vista). Connected (I didn’t have a profile) and browsed the device. Copied what I could (some folders had files in use, so I just skipped them; I thought Vista had fixed that copy issue where it runs into a problem and just stops, but seems its still there in this case).
Also backuped the data on the MiniSD card I have in there.

  3. Wipe
  4. Installing a new OS should do that, probably don’t need to do this manually, but its available in the Settings:System:Clear Storage. (Wonder if it would wipe the MiniSD too?)

  5. Upgrade
  6. Need to confirm I already CID unlocked it. I believe I did.

How do I verify if I already CID unlocked it?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=329170 Seems to have a util to do it. Adam suggested I try to flash with Cingular or TMobile and see what that does (if its still locked, the updaters will fail).

    Starting here: http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Wizard, I need to determine if I have G3 or G4: http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Wizard_Versions. I’d say I have a G3:

    IPL 1.01
    SPL 1.06

So, trying http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=249474 to unlock it.

Doesn’t seem to work with Vista.

Trying the HTC new ROM http://www.htcamerica.net/support/8125/software-downloads.html.
    I currently have

    ROM Version: 1.1.9.3
    ROM Date: 9/16/05
    Radio Version: 01.01.10
    Protocol Version: 4.0.13.16
    ExtROM version: 1.1.9.106

So this should be a serious upgrade. I might try the TMobile one at some point, but since I’m with ATT at the moment, makes sense to use this ROM. ATT’s site leads to a dead end as far as finding their ROM:

  7. New OS: WM6 or 6.1
  8. WM6 is not officially supported, but should be available from xda-developers.com.

    XDA Wizard WM6 for newbies

  9. ActiveSync w/ Outlook 2007
  10. Should be fine with Windows Mobile Device Center.

What I want in a Phone/PDA

Requirements

  1. Make calls (the k-jam was slow, shesh, even the AT&T Tilt is slow)
  2. Do email – both personal and business
  3. Browse the web – BB doesn’t support crap. IE (even on WinMO 6) is old. Opera is slow.
  4. Address book (sync over the phone network, with Google or Outlook)
  5. Calendar (sync over the phone network, with Google or Outlook)
  6. Task List (sync over the phone network, with Google or Outlook)
  7. Bluetooth: hands free w/ my Jawbone, data xfer.
  8. ssh
  9. Qwerty Keyboard (the AT&T Tilt is mushy, the BB is pretty good).
  10. Big, clear screen
  11. Make outgoing calls hands free (voice dialing).
  12. 3+MP Camera (N90 is Awesome! Tilt is ok. K-Jam is similar in focus, but low on MP)
  13. View images
  14. Play music (BB 8700c is crap! WinMoMedia Player is ok
  15. GPS Maps (Google maps pseudo GPS isn’t too bad. Tilt has GPS, but the update feature is annoying)
  16. Games (though i usually read RSS feeds in my free time)
  17. RSS
  18. 3G (using EDGE now, and ssh is … sluggish to say the least)
  19. WiFi (when I’m at home or some free is availble. Maybe some day the data network will be as fast as wifi)
  20. Alarm (BB is CRAP. WinMo has 5 customizable alarms, quite good)
  21. Real network (I don’t get that MEdiaNet crap from AT&T

Blackberry 8700c

I\’m trying out a Blackberry 8700c for work. My first time using a Blackberry device/OS.
Going to list some Pros/Cons and compare with my WM5 device (i-mate K-Jam).

8700c   K-Jam
Pro Con Comparison Pro Con
x Dialing speed – When I push buttons, the bb dials. Not so on the KJam, which has serious lag. x
x Alarm – the bb alarm options are very limited: daily alarm: on/off, time, snooze, active on weekend: yes/no. Where as the wm deive has 3 alarms, each with checkboxes for each day so you can pick and choose when you want each alarm to work. x
x Navigation: Touchscreen really kicks ass. The wheel on the BB is pretty nice too, but selecting text is damn annoying. x
