Motorola H700

Posted in Bluetooth Headset at 10.35 by Gabe

So, the Logitech was crackling/crunching so much I decided to get a different BT headset. I wanted the 820, but no one had it in stock. I grabbed the H700 from a Cingular kiosk at Alderwood mall. Works much better. I heard a little crackling/crunching, but MUCH less than the Logitech.

It uses a standard mini-usb connector which is great, so I can charge it with the same cable as my phone. The Logitech had some silly custom connector.

I’m still looking for a set that has the features I’m missing though.

PuTTY Improvements

Posted in Computer at 10.31 by Gabe

I use PuTTY, but it needs some improvements

1. Opening a new session should not require using the mouse.
2. Shortcuts/sessions are clumsy at best.
3. Tabs are useful for organizing logically groups of terminals (I’m ssh-ed into the web, app and DB server for the “dev” environment).
4. Scripting. I found the -m switch, but it runs the commands and then exits. I wanted to have it run and stay open so I could script a shortcut that would take me to a specific location (say dev logs).
5. Auto login. I found -l and -pw so it works pretty good, but the password is unencrypted. I guess that’s what keys are for. Oh well.
6. Session properties/settings are hard to apply/create.
7. Terms used for SSH tunnels are confusing.

Logitech Mobile Freedom Bluetooth Headset

Posted in Bluetooth Headset at 8.56 by Gabe

So, the Logitech Mobile Freedom Bluetooth Headset came highly recommended, but was sold out when it came time for me to buy a headset. I checked Logitech’s web site and decided on the Logitech Mobile Traveller Bluetooth Headset but so far I’m not impressed.

Issues:
1. Can’t play music – I guess it needs to be a stereo headset
2. Doesn’t play the custom songs I’ve picked for my contacts – probably same as #1
3. Hurts my ear – I know it needs to be tight to stay on my ear, but shit.
4. I’m wondering if there’s a better way to “move” it when not in use (so I can hear from that ear). I’ve been hanging it on my shirt, but its slow to put onto my ear so I’ve missed at least 1 call so far. I can just hold it to my ear, but then its not hands-free!!
5. Crunching noises – not sure if thats this heatset or my phone (been having audio problems with my phone before getting the headset), but nearly all of my conversations have a lot of crunching noises over the people’s voices.
6. Can’t seem to record new voice tags with it.
7. When the phone is “on but the display is off”, pushing the multifunction button on the headset (which normally initiates the voice dialer) does nothing. I shouldn’t have to take out the phone and “turn it on” to make a call.

So, based on those, anyone have any recommendations? I’m gonna stop by the T-Mobile store (since I’m a t-mobile customer) and see what they have. Try out another one to see if i still hear the crunching noise or not.
